The Secret to Accomplishment

Just Do it

JUST DO IT!

Nike said it best and it’s true. Last weekend I ran a two day business event with a business partner. It was about how to successfully start and maintain an entrepreneurial venture and I was speaking specifically about goal setting and then also the importance of your health and well-being when going into business.

Not only will you be more productive, better focussed and charged up but remember that you are your business and if you are ill or not performing for some reason it costs you money!

You can have all the business plans, strategies and techniques in the world but if you don’t have the health, vitality and energy to execute them, then forget it. The first step is energy.

But I digress. The reason for this post is that up until three weeks prior to the event, I wasn’t going to do it. I didn’t even know about it.

It was a last minute thing and when I was asked if I would co-host it, I initially thought “NO WAY!”

I already had a couple of talks on that week and didn’t think we’d get enough people to fill a room. I would need to re-purpose some content and so came the excuses.

But then, I thought “Sod it! – Just do it!”

And you know what. It was fine. It was great in fact.

The truth is, that often when we are given a project to do, a report or some other kind of task or work, the work itself tends to expand to fill the time available. So whether we had 3 weeks or 3 months, I suspect there wouldn’t have been much difference.

I noticed this a lot at work and also now when I have to do something. The task itself can be procrastinated on and ultimately you get it done, but equally you would have completed it in less time.

So what was my lesson in all this (and to you too). JUST DO IT.

You never know, it might well turn out just fine and even though you might not have the resources to make it “perfect”, you’ll still get it done or at least learn in the process.

Think back to something you’ve done in the past when you had that mentality to “just do it”. Does this make sense to you? What do you think? Let me know in the comments section.
