I’m often asked about my facial routine. Truth be told, until about 5 years ago I didn’t have one. I didn’t use lotion or creams or anything. I would just have a shower and that’s about it.
Even now, I do very little. I don’t like using much man-made things on my body, hair or face. Often these things can be full of parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulphates (SLS), sodium laureth sulphates (SLES). Even hair styling products – I use very rarely.
However, like I said, about 5 years ago I started using some kind of lotion or cream on my face. Vanity perhaps? Influence from a girlfriend, perhaps? Either way, what I use has changed over time. Usually it’s something that I would be also prepared to eat. I think as a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea not to rub anything into your skin that you wouldn’t also be prepared to eat. Your skin is eating it after all? Of course, not always possible. I don’t think I would eat my shampoo, but what I put on my face, pretty much, yes.
What is it I use on my face
Right now, my favourite thing is a Cannabis Satvia butter, but also sometimes I use Rosehip Oil, and in the past I have also used Avocado Oil or simply coconut oil/butter.
About two months ago, I also got into using a Gua Sha tool (jade stone that you rub on the skin) from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). You rub on the skin until you start to go mildly red. This is supposedly drawing blood supply to the skin and giving it healing properties. I get you can get the same affect from other things like saunas too?
About two months ago, I also got into using a Gua Sha tool (jade stone that you rub on the skin) from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). You rub on the skin until you start to go mildly red. This is supposedly drawing blood supply to the skin and giving it healing properties – which can reduce fine lines and wrinkles (or at least make less prominent). I get you can get the same affect of increased blood flow to the surface from other things like saunas, and some of the Qi Gong style activities I use too?
So, will it make you more youthful and reduce wrinkles. Well, what I believe is that firstly, good skin comes from within. I.e. you can use this stuff, but if you don’t drinks lots of water, sleep well and enough, eat a healthier diet rich in vegetables, don’t smoke, drink alcohol only infrequently and don’t eat sugary things, I don’t know this will much help. Once you’ve done those things, then sure, the Gua Sha, creams, collagen supplement etc will help and have more of an effect, I believe.
Here’s a video showing you what I currently do (of course, I’m always mixing things up, so it might be different in another 6 months or so).
